Overview
Clamelle Tablets are a new treatment for chlamydia in the privacy of your own home. They contain Azithromycin (500mg), an effective antibiotic, now available without a prescription. New Clamelle Tablets are available as part of the Clamelle Chlamydia Testing Kit. Always read the label.
It comes as two tablets which are taken together as a single dose and works by killing the bacteria which causes chlamydia. It should be taken as soon as possible after a positive test result.
Who can take Clamelle?
It can be taken by men and women aged 16 years and over who have tested positive for chlamydia and who have no symptoms. It can also be taken by sexual partners of people who have tested positive, without them needing to take a test, if they have a partner notification slip.
You can also buy Clamelle Tablets if you have a positive NHS chlamydia test; provided the pharmacist decides you are eligible. If you are a partner of someone who has a positive NHS chlamydia test, you can also buy Clamelle Tablets.
Taking Clamelle Tablets with other medicines
Clamelle Tablets do not work as well if taken at the same time as antacids (indigestion treatments). If you do take antacids you should take Clamelle Tablets at least one hour before, or two hours after.
If you take the oral contraceptive pill and you experience vomiting or diarrhoea, you will need to take extra precautions after taking Clamelle Tablets. Read your 'pill' patient information leaflet carefully.
Who should not take Clamelle Tablets?
Anyone that has symptoms of chlamydia or symptoms suggestive of other sexually transmitted infections should see their GP or visit a local sexual health clinic. Chlamydia often has no symptoms, in fact up to 70% of people do not experience any symptoms of infection. Clamelle Tablets is only suitable for treating chlamydia without symptoms in people aged 16 years and over.
How do I take it?
Take both Clamelle Tablets together as soon as possible after your test result.
The best time to take it is just before bed and at least two hours after food or drink.
You should abstain from sex for seven days after both you and your partner(s) have been treated with Clamelle Tablets.
If you take the oral contraceptive pill and you have vomiting or diarrhoea after taking Clamelle Tablets, you will need to take additional precautions for the next seven days. Please follow your pill's patient information leaflet.
